The Buick

The Buick

The first Buick built for sale was the Model B in 1904. David Dunbar Buick began his career building bathtubs in the late 1800s but later made the switch to creating engines in 1899. Buick's claim to fame was the overhead valve engine, a very powerful tool ahead of its time. In 1906, the F series was launched, which continued for five years and included the 1910 Buick Model F. It was because of this car that Buick quickly became the largest seller of motorized vehicles, ahead of Ford. It was truly a revolutionary car.

During the early 1900s, a transition was being made between horse carriages and automotive vehicles. In fact, many motorized vehicles were referred to as "horseless carriages," and, although they drove on the right side of the road, the driver's seat was still positioned on the right side of the car. It wasn't until later that the driver's seat was moved to the left side to maximize performance in heaver traffic at higher speeds. Buick made this switch in 1914. Other companies began making the switch as well in the early 1910s and 1920s.

The Roaring 30s

The 1930s was a great time to purchase a motorized vehicle. With new advancements in technology, there was a greater emphasis on the engineering of these vehicles. This led to significant improvements and a higher demand for such cars.

Hood ornaments became very popular in the 20s and 30s. After purchasing a car, it was very common for a dealer provide an array of hood ornaments for the buyer to select. There were many different styles and options to choose from. Buick's hood ornaments were based many times on popular public figures during this era, some of which, including Isadora Duncan, were rumored to have been having a love affair with the president of Buick during this time.

The Hundred MPH Car

In the late 30s, Buick switched from classifying cars as number series and began creating name based models. The first of this kind was The Century. The car was given this title as it was the first car in the United States advertised to go up to 100 mph.

nother unique feature of the cars in this decade was the rumble seat. Rumble seats lifted out of the back of the car and could fit two more passengers if needed during drive time. Shortly after, the rumble seat feature was no longer included in these cars as it was later found to be a relatively unsafe method of transporting passengers.

Machines & Tools

Restoring classic automobiles can be a very difficult task given that most of the parts are no longer produced and distributed. These are the machines and tools Bill Tecco uses to create the parts needed to finish and restore some of the most beautiful vehicles of the nation's past. He's been collecting these tools since he was eight years old.
